The IJIS Institute is pleased to announce the creation of a newly formed CJIS Security Policy Working Group that will assess the impacts to applications and their environment given the recently released CJIS Security Policy v5.9.1 and the upcoming v5.9.2. Specifically, the group will review its alignment with the broader security controls and coordinate educational and informational campaigns and instructional series. This working group will report to the IJIS Institute’s CJIS Advisory Committee.
Background
The FBI CJIS Division published 5.9.1 in October. This version incorporates twenty-one recommendations adopted by the Advisory Policy Board (APB) at the December 2021 APB meeting. FBI CJIS will also release version 5.9.2 within the next year. This will incorporate the APB recommendations from the June 2022 APB meeting. Further, the Division is working on version 6.0, which is expected to restructure and more fully incorporate the changes.
Impact:
The security updates that have been approved by the APB have the potential for substantial operational, technical, and fiscal impacts for state CJIS agencies and for State and Local criminal justice agencies. These impacts, of course, affect industry solution providers’ CJIS-related products and services.
Working Group Purpose:
This working group intends to assess the impacts of the CJIS Security Policy v5.9.2, its alignment with the broader security controls (i.e., NIST 800-53) and coordinate educational, informational campaigns, and instructional series. This working group will enable IJIS to inform its public and private sector community of the impact on current operational processes, technology impacts, and implementation guidelines. Further, it will equip them to address funding, planning, training, implementation guidance, and policy compliance for those necessary technical and/or operational changes.
Membership:
Are you interested in having a seat at the table to address the impacts of CJIS Security Policy v5.9.2 with public and private sector thought leaders? Please send a resume and brief statement of interest to IJIS Program Director Robert May at Robert.May@ijis.org. Applicants must be a member of the IJIS Institute to participate.
