IJIS Institute Awards Joseph Wheeler with Robert. P Shumate Award

Ashburn, Va., February 22, 2021 – The IJIS Institute recently awarded Joseph D. K. Wheeler with the Robert P. Shumate National Public Safety and Justice Contributor to Excellence Award at its 2021 National Symposium.

Joseph Wheeler was this year’s recipient given the vital contributions he has consistently made throughout his distinguished career and his unparalleled devotion to addressing the needs of the criminal justice community. His work has impacted the lives of thousands of men and women as he sought to make improvements to the justice community nationwide. Specifically, his efforts assisting state and local agencies with policy development, procurement, standards migration, and project management services have ushered numerous criminal justice and law enforcement information sharing solutions to their greatest potential.

Joseph Wheeler has served as a management consultant in the field of information technology (IT) and government operations since 1983. His expertise is applying information and communication technology to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and equity of justice systems. He has supported numerous justice and public safety clients with the implementing and managing of IT, planning and implementing integrated justice information systems, and organizational change management.

Wheeler was a founding member and the former CEO of MTG Management Consultants, now part of Mission Critical Partners, where he currently serves as the Vice President of the Justice and Courts division. He also serves as the Chair of the IJIS Institute Courts Advisory Committee (ICAC), where he has co-authored several briefs, papers, and presentations on the role of technology in the courts domain. Additionally, his efforts as Chair of the ICAC have received the highest level of recognition from both industry and court practitioners nationwide.

The Robert P. Shumate National Public Safety and Justice Contributor to Excellence Award is presented annually by the IJIS Institute to an individual from either industry or the public sector that has made the most valuable contribution to justice and public safety information sharing over his or her career. Each awardee is dedicated to the Institute’s mission to drive public sector technology innovation and empower information sharing to promote safer and healthier communities.
