The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) — the research and development arm of the U.S. Department of Justice — launched an open challenge soliciting innovations in measuring community perceptions of police and public safety.
Big data mining has the potential to provide near-real-time information on attitudes toward and experiences with police — but there’s risk of underrepresentation and bias. We’re looking for methods that are representative, cost effective, accurate, and can be frequently administered.
NIJ encourages you to submit innovative social measurement methods for the chance to win prizes totaling $175,000.
Entries from individuals, organizations, and interdisciplinary teams are welcome. NIJ will accept submissions under one or both of the following categories:
Category 1 — Approaches that use a survey instrument, whether the sampling design is probability, nonprobability, or a combination of the two.
Category 2 — Approaches that use non-survey instrument methods.
Contestants can submit entries through July 31, 2023.
