On July 11, the IJIS Institute, in partnership with the bipartisan Congressional AI Caucus, hosted a Capitol Hill briefing exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) is being responsibly and effectively applied across the public safety landscape. A recording of the briefing is available here.

The event featured panelists from the Major County Sheriffs of America, Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies (ASCIA), American Correctional Association (ACA), National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), National Center for State Courts (NCSC), National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), and leading AI partner C3.ai.

Panelists explained key ways AI is being used in public safety. For example:

  • Accelerating digital forensics and cybercrime investigations, especially in child exploitation cases.
  • Summarizing large volumes of incoming tips to help prioritize frontline responses.
  • Streamlining court processes with AI-powered e-filing, jury portals, and document review.
  • Transcribing body-worn camera footage in real time to reduce paperwork and free up officer time.
