Ashburn, VA – July 22, 2024 – The IJIS Institute is proud to announce the appointment of its Executive Director, Maria Cardiellos, as the Vice Chair of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Global Federal Advisory Committee (GAC). This prestigious appointment recognizes Maria’s exceptional leadership, profound dedication, and expertise in the justice information sharing and public safety communities.
Maria Cardiellos has been involved with justice and public safety for over 40 years, 11 of which have been with the IJIS Institute, where she has been a pivotal figure in advancing the mission of the IJIS Institute that is dedicated to driving public sector innovation and empowering information sharing to promote safer and healthier communities. Her role as the Vice Chair of the Global Advisory Committee will seek to benefit the collective justice and public safety communities nationwide.
“I am deeply honored to be appointed as the Vice Chair of the Global Advisory Committee,” said Ms. Cardiellos, who joins longtime IJIS member Sheriff Mike Millstead, representing the National Sheriffs’ Association, as the Chair for the GAC. “I am honored to support Chairman Milstead and look forward to working alongside leaders in this field across the justice and public safety ecosystem to make a meaningful impact in a time where efficient and effective data sharing are so critical to the health and safety of our communities.”
The IJIS Institute has been involved with the GAC since its inception. The GAC consists of organizations appointed by the U.S. Attorney General and works to provide the Department of Justice with appropriate input from local, state, tribal, and federal agencies/association in the ongoing pursuit of interjurisdictional and multidisciplinary justice information sharing. The IJIS Institute would also like to recognize and congratulate Kevin Bowling who has ended his term as the Chair of the GAC and is beginning retirement after an exemplary career in public service. He served for over 40 years as an attorney, court administrator, judicial branch educator, and consultant. In addition to serving as a valuable member of the IJIS Institute, he is a past president of the National Association for Court Management (NACM) and Co-Chair of the Joint Technology Committee. When asked about Kevin’s tenure, Ms. Cardiellos stated “We have been privileged to be led by Chairman Bowling and contribute to his many accomplishments over the years. Though his role may change, we are hopeful that he will remain actively engaged in the future.”
