This is the third in a series of webinars by the IJIS Institute highlighting BJA-sponsored corrections information sharing projects around the country. This webinar features the Alabama Secure Sharing Utility for Recidivism Elimination (ASSURE) project. According to recent statistics, 56% of state prison inmates and 64% of local jail inmates have a history of mental illness and/or behavioral health problems. More than 74% of those offenders have a history of substance abuse or dependency. ASSURE was developed to improve access to, and continuity of care for, those offenders with substance abuse (SA) and mental health (MH) issues who are also under probation supervision in the community and for those released from the Alabama Department of Corrections into the community. Specifically, ASSURE targets the lack of information sharing relative to offenders’ substance abuse and mental health diagnosis and treatment histories between the Alabama Department of Corrections, Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles, Alabama Department of Mental Health, and community-based SA/MH treatment providers. The exchange uses GRA and NIEM. GFIPM user, entity, and resource attributes to support justice-to-health exchanges are also used to support access control and privilege management.
