Artificial intelligence (AI)-based capabilities and solutions are rapidly becoming a part of our personal and professional lives. In the professional environment, executives are making decisions to implement AI-based capabilities to achieve operational efficiencies. However, with the increased use of AI comes greater risk and liability in terms of the ethical and responsible use of these solutions.
As part of the IJIS Institute’s webinar series, this webinar will explore the transformative potential of AI in the US public safety and justice sectors and the associated considerations of security and privacy. It will focus on the critical importance of data, particularly Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Protected Health Information (PHI), emphasizing the essential privacy and security considerations for deploying AI technologies. Additionally, the webinar will introduce and discuss the principles of Privacy by Design (PbD) and their relevance in AI system implementation to help mitigate the associated risks and liabilities.
Panelists:
Patrick Lo – Patrick Lo Currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Privacy Horizon, where he is responsible for overseeing the development of the Company’s PHI Framework (product) and strategic roadmap. Patrick is a highly experienced professional in the field of information privacy and security with over 25 years of expertise. He holds certifications as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Information Privacy Professional/Canada (CIPP/C). He specializes in providing privacy compliance expertise and practical solutions to early-stage, small, and medium-sized healthcare and healthcare technologies companies.
Throughout his career, Patrick has held various executive positions in the private and public sectors, with a focus on developing and implementing privacy and data protection programs in the Canadian healthcare sector. In addition to his executive roles, Patrick is one of the instructors with the National Institutes for Health Informatics (NIHI), formerly the Waterloo Institute for Health Informatics Research (WIHIR). He teaches workshops on eHealth Privacy, including Agile PIA and methodology, Privacy & Security for Startups & App Developers, and the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Additionally, he is one of the instructors for the McMaster University ePrivacy certificate program and Cybersecurity course. He also co-developed and delivered a six-week cybersecurity boot camp as part of the Toronto Metropolitan University program.
Stacey Wright – Stacey Wright currently serves as the Director of Cyber Threat Intelligence for CyberWA. She is a cybersecurity and threat intelligence professional with U.S. Intelligence Community (IC), law enforcement, and program management experience and a background in building and running teams aligned to industry and U.S. government standards. Practical knowledge in developing trusted partnerships, managing complex initiatives, applying actionable intelligence, and improving the cybersecurity of state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) governments. National speaker on cybersecurity and cybercrime recognized for the ability to explain complex topics to executives, promote best practices, and provide strategic guidance.
Ashwini Jarral – Ashwini Jarral currently serves as the advisor to the IJIS Institute Executive Director.  Mr. Jarral also provides consulting services for non-profits and not-for-profit organizations to help advise them on the issues associated with business and digital transformation strategies.
Prior to his current role, Jarral was the co-founder of an innovative healthcare technology company, IDYA4, serving as the Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Jarral provided oversight on business development and day-to-day administrative and operational functions before the acquisition of IDYA4 by CloudMD in 2021.
Prior to IDYA4, Jarral served as the Executive Director (CEO) of the IJIS Institute, a nonprofit corporation formed by the U.S. Department of Justice, to help state and local governments develop ways to share information among disciplines engaged in homeland security, justice, and public safety.
With more than 25 years of experience in IT consulting and operations management, acquired through various executive roles, Jarral has been recognized nationally, and internationally for his work in information sharing since the tragic event of 9/11. In addition to the Justice and Public Safety sector, he also worked in the private sector providing professional technology services and solutions in finance and telecommunications.
Jarral served on the Department of Justice Global Federal Advisory Committee, an advisory group to the U.S. Attorney General, and currently serves on the FirstNet Authority’s Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC)s, the Identity, Credential and Access Management (ICAM) Task Force and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)s Computed Crime and Digital Evidence Committee. Jarral previously managed the Standards Coordination Council (SCC) under the White House Sub-Committee of the Information Sharing and Access Interagency Policy Committee (ISA IPC), has co-chaired the Object Management Group (OMG) Information Sharing Working Group, served on the Global Standards Council (GSC) and served on the Board of Directors of the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA).
